Color Story: Cheese

This week we have drawn the inspiration for our color story from the cheese post we presented on Monday.  Not only were we able to pull from the variety of colors within the cheeses, but we used colors from the fruits, as well.  The green of the grapes is divine and the rich "purpley"-red hue of the apple round out the palette.  A combination of these colors would be great for a kitchen or even a family dining room.  Send us your thoughts and ideas for usage.  Until next week...

Treat of the Week: Candy Apples

Halloween is just a couple of days away.  This seems like the perfect time to bring you candy apples as the Treat of the Week.  I was a child in the period before all of the candy scares (which, by the way, are mostly myth).  My trick or treat bag almost always included homemade popcorn balls, rice krispy treats, and apples.

Candy apples have been a Halloween staple for many years.  I enjoy all of the varieties, but on a big apple you can only reasonably expect to enjoy one variety at a time.  We have solved that problem by making ours in mini form.  You can enjoy these bite size versions and get a little of all of your favorites.

Happy Halloween!  Our post today is dedicated to a bit of Halloween fun.  I thought it might be nice to put up a few fun facts to get you in a spooky mood.  But first, check out is this adorable little mummy cupcake.  Decorating it is simple, and it gets rave reviews.

Halloween week in hectic for our family (and many others, I imagine).  For that reason, I admit I have taken a serious shortcut here.  The cake was a box mix and the icing was pre-made.  I am a firm believer in homemade, but sometimes convenience wins.

Lola Cooks: Rustic Tomato Basil Soup

Fall is soup season.  I like soup just about anytime, but there is nothing quite as comforting on a chilly afternoon as a steamy bowl of soup and a little something to accompany it.  Crackers are always a good choice.  However, you can't go wrong with some bread or crostini either.

When I was seven we lived in Michigan above a hardware store.  I would walk the four blocks each day to and from school.  On chilly afternoons my grandmother would always have Popeye cued up for me on the television.  I would watch while she started dinner.  On many cooler nights the fall back was Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese Sandwiches.  Grandma always used a canned soup and we loved it.

I still love Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese today although I make an updated version.  Our soup is homemade in a French inspired, rustic way.  It is delicious and warrants making enough to can for future use.  Our grilled cheese is simple enough, though I use different cheese than I got as a kid.  Nevertheless, the flavor and experience have the same effect... pure comfort.

Raising the Bar: Repurposed Credenza Bar Cabinet

You may have noticed that I have a thing for acorns.  We have taken that a step further this week with a repurposing project that anyone with a limited amount of refinishing skills could tackle.  The used office credenza in our photo is used as a bar cabinet, but it could have other purposes including, well… a business credenza.  You are limited only by your imagination.

To me, the acorn says “potential”.  I am stunned that the small seed can become a thick, formidable oak.  It just hides all of that strength under its tiny little hat.  However, you mustn’t feel tied to the acorn.  Choose a motif that suits you and your décor and run with it.  The key is to stay rather bold and graphic.  You want enough of the wood to show through for it to make sense.

There is no discounting the allure of cheese.  No matter what type you prefer, almost everyone has a favorite cheese dish.  Personally, I could eat my weight in classic Mac & Cheese with Bacon.  However, I am perfectly happy with a cheese platter paired up with fruit, meats, bread and crackers, and wine, of course.

Cheese, like wine and coffee, is such a broad topic that we could not cover all of the details in one post.  Instead, what we offer up today is a general overview of cheese with some helpful facts and tips.

Color Story: Pumpkin Cookie w/Salted Caramel Glaze

Our color story this week comes from the Treat of the Week.  If you haven't checked out the recipe, please do.  The instructions are easy and the result is amazing.

This color story screams fall.  I added a bit of the khaki color from the sunflower seeds to balance it out and give a strong neutral presence which could be used as a base color.  The subtle differences in orange could certainly change the mood of a space depending on their use.  What do you see?  How would you use this palette?  Please leave your comments at the end of the post.  If you have pictures which illustrate the use of a similar palette I would love to see them.

Until next week...
