Treat of the Week: Rocky Road Doughnuts

Brace yourself. It's going to be a bumpy ride.  This treat of the week is loaded... with deliciousness.  There is nothing light about it, but it is eight bites of naughty heaven.

I know many of you are minding your intake of fried foods.  I promise to bring you a baked doughnut in the future, but a little indulgence can be good if taken in moderation.  This recipe yields a baker’s dozen plus some doughnut holes.  Be prepared to give some away to get them out of the house.  Make them... eat one... hide one for later... and then remove all evidence.

Yesterday was Rocky Road Day and today is National Doughnut Day.  We took our cues from that to make today’s Treat of the Week.  This doughnut is our basic cake doughnut recipe.  We made it even more decadent by adding chocolate, nuts, and marshmallow.  The result is sinfully good.

As a sidenote:  Rocky Road is good in just about any form… even life.  It is the rocks in the road that make us who we are.  Even when the trail seems impassable, our strength and the support of those we hold close get us through.  We must be fearless in life and view obstacles as opportunities.  As my good friend once told me, “If you don’t like the view from where you stand, change your perspective.”

Savour Spotlight: Living Simplistically

If you have been following along here, you already know how I am inspired by modern design.  I love the simplicity and clean ines of it.  You have also probably seen a post (or dozen) about repurposing or upcycling materials to breathe new life into them.  For example, we turned old palettes into butterfly art, a patio farm table for 12, and upcycled this vintage settee and office credenza.

We kick off our Savour Spotlight series today with a look at one of my new favorites.  Josh Waldbaum is the artist behind Living Simplistically.  This home furnishings company uses reclaimed materials to create unique, long-lasting pieces with style.  He has managed to capture simple elegance and eco-friendly in his carefully-crafted line.

¡Ay, Caray! : Chili Lime Fruit Cup

My years in San Antonio were filled with wonderful memories.  My wife and I bought our first house there and had our second son.  The area is steeped in culture and history... and there is no shortage of food.  If you are a tex-mex fan you are in luck.

One of our favorite discoveries there was Copas de Frutas (fruit cup).  Within 5 miles of our home there were three fruterias where they sold fruit cup, impossibly good fruit popsicles (paleteras), and fruit-flavored waters (aguas frescas).  Our favorite was the basic fruit cup, but there were certainly variations available.

The one ingredient that is slightly different here from other recipes you will find is citric acid.  This is the stuff that gets added to candy and soft drinks to give it a ‘bite’.  It is very sour and adds a delightful kick to an already good fruit salad.  We used it to mimic the flavor of Lucas, the popular Mexican, sour, powdered candy.  You will most likely find it at a specialty supermarket like Whole Foods.  Check first in the bulk section.
