Treat of the Week: Pumpkin Spice Malted Milk Shake

I've got pumpkin fever.

Nevermind that it is one of my favorite colors.  Pumpkins are everywhere right now.  I am dying to make some pumpkin cheesecake, whoopie pies, and more.  But that will have to hold.  This weekend we are having a little Halloween get together.  I wanted to make something a bit unexpected.  I think this should do the trick.

Pumpkinspice1

Our pumpkin spice malted milk shake is the perfect amount of pumpkin flavor paired up with vanilla ice cream and just enough malted milk to give the shake some density.  This is a delicious way to get the coolness of the malted milkshake with the flavor of a warm piece of pie... and the straw makes it perfect for sipping through a mask.

Lola Cooks: Mincemeat

The holidays draw nearer each day.  The slight chill in the morning air reminds me that soon there will be fires in the fireplace and all that comes with that.  If you know me, you know I am already thinking of food.  There are so many good seassonal foods to enjoy in the fall.  One that is a bit forgotten, but always takes me straight back to a simpler time is mincemeat.

Mincemeat1

Traditionally, mincemeat was made with meat.  It still is in many kitchens today, but we have opted for a meatless variety here.  MIncemeat has several applications, but the most common is pie filling.  At some point mincemeat pie gained popularity as a yuletide treat.  While less common today, you can still find it in some homes as a part of holiday meals.  In fact, if you think you might be using it in that way, now might be a good time to make and store it.

One of my favorite childhood holiday treats was a thumbprint cookie that my mom made filled with a mound of mincemeat.  I looked forward to it every year as the baking commenced.  My kids have only been introduced to mincemeat recently.  The word itself turned them off a bit, but the taste made up for it.

HalloweenwreathYou might remember this DIY wreath from Holiday 2010.  We brought it back out and added a few mini pumpkins and gourds for our Halloween decor.

We have also included a very batty drum shade treatment that is sure to create some drama over the breakfast table.  The printables appear after the jump.  As a sidenote, subscribers got this project a week ago.  If you are not a subscriber become one today here.  Not only do you get exclusives and sneak peeks, but subscriber only contests, as well.

Lastly, be sure to check out this post on a super easy mummy cupcake to add to your Halloween treat table.  The pic follows.

Oils are an essential part of cooking and baking.  While they have gotten somewhat of a bad reputation over the years, they add much flavor and fats that are an essential ingredient in our overall body composition.

For centuries man has found ways to squeeze the oils out of foods for culinary pursuits.  Fortunately, today a wide variety of oils are available at most supermarkets and even more at specialty markets.  Here we have listed the most commonly found types.

Meet The Cocktail Whisperer: An Interview with Warren Bobrow

October is flying by so quickly, but not so quickly that we can't slow down for a little drink.  We are fortunate to have Warren Bobrow present us today with a citrusy drink that is sure to please.  This drink is light, sparkly, and aromatic.

Absolutlymarvelous1

I had the pleasure of meeting Warren on Twitter, and without sounding too crazy there was an immediate connection.  If you are a Tweeter, you may know what I mean – people come together on Twitter rather quickly because like interests are the connectors.  Conversations are fluid and everyone is so welcoming.  Your circle of friends grows within minutes.  It is fortunate because I met a real gem that I am pleased to now call my friend.

Here’s a bit about Warren:
Warren Bobrow is the Food and Drink Editor of the 501c3 non profit Wild Table on Wild River Review located in Princeton, New Jersey. He attended Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans in 2011. His research on Biodynamic and Organic Wine and Food will appear in the 2012 Oxford Encyclopedia of Food/Drink in America, Ed., 2. Warren has published over three hundred articles in fewer than two years since his reinvention on everything from cocktail mixology to wine writing to restaurant reviews.

We always knew that Lola would need a bigger home someday.  Within the next few weeks we will be launching our new site.  The blog will remain mostly the same (with a few minor changes), but the rest of the site will be *all new*.  There will be features like a photo gallery, opportunities for readers to submit articles, access to our creative services, and our new Today's Nest store.

Here you can see a little peak at where we stand today.  We will be sure to keep you posted on the launch date.  We are even planning a little virtual launch party on Facebook and Twitter.  We hope to see you there.

In the meantime, if you experience problems viewing the blog please let us know.  We are trying to keep remodeling issues to a minimum, but the inner workings of computer links can be tricky.
